Compounded Medication
What is Compounded Medication?
Compounded medications are custom-formulated treatments prepared by licensed pharmacists for individual patients when a licensed provider determines they are clinically appropriate.
Unlike mass-manufactured drugs, compounded formulations may differ in strength, ingredients, or stability depending on the prescription and pharmacy.
- Not FDA-approved — compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness.
- Formulations may differ from commercially manufactured drugs in strength, ingredients, or stability.
- Prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies operating under Section 503A or 503B.
- Prescribed solely at the discretion of an independent, licensed healthcare provider.
